Project
Tide-to-Table
A Tsunami Fishing Recovery Project in Welipatanvila.
2005-2008- Fundraising, mainly in New Zealand, has helped secure a livelihood for the local fishermen -" the fish they cook for us tastes 'the best ever'- you can even eat the bones!"
Project Oru 100- replacing the 100 oru (outriggers) wiped out by the tsunami; the fishermen and families built their own oru, moulding a fibre glass base and lacing it to a mango wood top with rope made from the coconut husk fibre. |
Project
Ice
A 3-tonne flake-ice plant has been built to enhance the quality of the fish caught and ensure a fair price. The bright blue plant is called 'Kiwi House'
Project Wheels - Refrigerated 3-wheeler motorbikes, sponsored by the Morgan Family Trust, have been built locally to complete the chilled supply chain
The fishermen from Welipatanvila are ecstatic and welcome our visits. |
Project
Tea Plantation
Supporting tea pluckers and their families- educational support for the children and a sustainable garden project for the elderly.
Support is given with educational supplies to the tea plantation crèches and child development centres. Fundraising monies are also used to support a gardening project for the elderly - there is no such thing as old-age pensions here- alas our first crop was destroyed by marauding wild boar!- thanks to The Rotary Club of St Johns the garden is now being fenced. |
Project
Books to Bali
Books to schools project, assisting children to read.
In Bali, the ability to read and speak English assists with jobs in the important tourist sector. Most locals cannot afford to buy a book. To date over 200 kg of books have been given to schools and fundraising has provided books for all classes in 5 schools. |
Project
Fishermen warmth-Bali
In the mornings the fishermen set sail, often in high seas, and often get swamped and then shiver until the sun comes up.
Icebreaker NZ and generous friends have supported this project to clothe the fishermen in merino or polar-fleece tops. |
